About All State Roofing – Brooklyn, an Owner-Run Roofing Company Since 1997
We’re a Brooklyn roofing company based at 235 43rd St in Sunset Park. John, the owner, still comes out to look at roofs and gives the price himself. Since 1997 we’ve fixed and replaced flat roofs on brownstones and rowhouses, shingle roofs on detached homes and roofs over storefronts and warehouses all over the borough.

Who We Are: A Sunset Park Roofing Company That Brooklyn Calls Back
All State Roofing – Brooklyn has been working on the borough’s roofs since 1997. We are a local, owner-run company, not a franchise or a lead service, and the person who quotes your job is the person responsible for it.
Most of our work comes from three kinds of calls: a roof that’s leaking right now, a roof that someone already “fixed” that’s still leaking, and an old roof that the owner wants an honest opinion on. In every case the job starts the same way. We get on the roof, find where the water is actually getting in, take photos, and explain what we found in plain English before anyone talks about price.
Why Brooklyn homeowners stick with us
Brooklyn roofs aren’t suburban roofs. Most of the homes we work on are attached, many are more than a century old, and almost all of them have a flat roof hidden behind a parapet wall. Water travels along party walls, under old coping stones and through decades of patched layers. Finding a leak on these buildings takes patience and experience, and that’s what we’ve built the company around.
We also say no when a quick fix is the wrong fix. One Brooklyn homeowner had other roofers ready to put a new roof right on top of the old one. John told him the old material had to come off first.
“John was the only one that said NO and told me that all the old stuff must be removed… My roof is now over 4 years old and it still looks like the day it was put on.”Paul L., Brooklyn · Yelp review, October 2022
What we hear on the first call
- The roofer patched it twice and it’s still dripping over the front windows.
- I got three quotes and they’re all over the place. Who’s right?
- My tenant is texting me pictures of a stain on the bedroom ceiling.
- We’re closing on a brownstone and the inspector flagged the roof.
If any of those sound familiar, give us a call. That’s exactly the kind of problem we handle every week.
Why Brooklyn Roofs Need a Brooklyn Roofer
The buildings, the rules and the weather here are different, and a roofer who doesn’t know them will miss the real cause of a leak.
Attached homes and party walls
On a block of rowhouses, water from the roof next door can run along a shared wall and show up in your top floor. We check both sides of the party wall before we blame your roof.
Parapets and coping stones
Cracked coping, open mortar joints and loose counterflashing let water into the wall itself. It’s one of the most common hidden leak sources on brownstones and walk-ups.
Flat roofs and ponding water
Low-slope roofs that sag or drain poorly hold water for days after a storm. Standing water breaks down seams, and clogged drains and leaders make it worse every fall.
Landmarked blocks
In historic districts like Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Fort Greene and Ditmas Park, roof work visible from the street needs approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Wind and water near the shore
Coney Island, Red Hook, Gerritsen Beach and Sheepshead Bay were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Homes near the water take more wind-driven rain, so flashing and edge details matter more.
Freeze-thaw winters, hot roofs in summer
Winter freeze-thaw cracks mortar and opens seams, and dark flat roofs bake in July. That’s why NYC requires reflective “cool roof” surfaces on most roof replacements.
How We Work on Every Brooklyn Roof
These are the rules we hold every job to, whether it’s a single cracked seam or a full tear-off down to the boards.
What you can count on
- A real diagnosis. We trace the water to where it enters: flashing, seam, drain, parapet, skylight or chimney.
- Photos of what we find, before and after the work, so you see what we see.
- Written, line-item quotes. If rotted deck boards turn up, the per-board price is already in the contract.
- The paperwork handled. DOB permits, Landmarks filings and FDNY-compliant torch work when the job needs them.
- Respect for your building. Sidewalks and neighbors’ roofs protected, clean-up every day, tenants kept informed.
- Materials from leading manufacturers, installed the way the manufacturer specifies.
What we won’t do
- Lay a new roof over two old ones. Building codes don’t allow it, and it traps moisture that rots the deck.
- Quote a roof we haven’t seen. A phone price can’t account for layers, rot or parapet damage.
- Coat over a wet roof. Silver paint or silicone on soaked insulation only hides the problem.
- Push “today only” pricing. Take the time you need to compare quotes.
- Skip permits or Landmarks rules to make a job faster or cheaper.
- Sell a replacement you don’t need. If a repair will honestly hold for years, we’ll say so.
What Happens After You Call
No mystery and no runaround. Here’s how a typical job runs, from the first call to the final walk-through.
For an active leak, we’ll talk you through protecting the inside of your home on that first call: move furniture and electronics, catch the water, and if the plaster is bulging, poke a small hole so it drains instead of bringing the ceiling down.

You call us Day 1
Tell us what you’re seeing and where. Emergency calls about active leaks and storm damage go to the front of the line.

On-roof inspection
We check the whole roof, not just the spot above the stain: surface, seams, flashing, parapets, drains, skylights and chimney.

Licensing, Permits and the NYC Roofing Rules We Follow
Roofing in New York City comes with more rules than almost anywhere in the country. Here’s what applies to Brooklyn roofs, and how we handle each one.
Home Improvement Contractor license
Roof work on a NYC home requires a Home Improvement Contractor license from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP). Our license number and proof of insurance are provided on request before any contract is signed.
DOB permits
Full roof replacements generally need a Department of Buildings permit, filed through DOB NOW. Most small repairs don’t. We tell you which applies to your job and handle the filing.
FDNY rules for torch-down
Torch-applied roofing is legal in NYC when the crew holds the required FDNY certificates and a fire guard watches the roof during and after torching.
Landmarks (LPC) approval
On landmarked blocks, work visible from the street — cornices, front parapets, slate — needs Landmarks Preservation Commission approval before it starts.
Cool roofs and Local Laws 92 & 94
Replacement roofs must meet NYC’s reflectivity rules, and replacing an entire roof assembly can trigger a solar or green roof requirement.
Layers, parapets and neighbors
No new roof over two or more existing layers. Many street-facing parapets need a yearly observation on file, and RPAPL 881 covers roof access when a neighbor refuses.
How to check any roofer before you hire them
Ask for the DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license number and look it up on the DCWP website. Ask for a certificate of insurance, a written scope that names the roofing system and permits, and photos of your roof. A real Brooklyn address and a phone that gets answered matter too. We’re happy to be checked the same way.

Questions About All State Roofing – Brooklyn
Straight answers to what people ask before they hire us. More reading on our roofing blog.
Who owns All State Roofing – Brooklyn?
The company is owner-run by John. He comes out to look at roofs, explains what he finds and gives the price himself, so the person who quotes your job is the person responsible for it.
How long has the company been in business?
We’ve been roofing in Brooklyn since 1997. In that time we’ve worked on brownstones, rowhouses, two-family homes, detached houses, co-ops, storefronts and warehouses across the borough.
Where is your office?
Our shop is at 235 43rd St, Brooklyn, NY 11232, in Sunset Park, a few blocks from Industry City. Call (929) 695-6095 before stopping by so someone is there to meet you.
Which areas do you serve?
All of Brooklyn, from Greenpoint and Williamsburg to Bay Ridge, Coney Island, Marine Park and Canarsie, plus nearby parts of Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan. If you’re not sure we cover your block, call and ask.
Do you take emergency roof calls?
Yes. Call (929) 695-6095 for an active leak or storm damage. We’ll tell you how to protect the inside right away, then make the roof watertight, with a temporary seal or tarp first if the weather won’t allow a permanent repair.
Are you licensed and insured?
NYC requires a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license for roof work on homes. We provide our license number and proof of insurance on request before any contract is signed, and we encourage you to verify them on the DCWP website.
Do you handle permits and Landmarks approval?
Yes. When a job needs a DOB permit, Landmarks Preservation Commission approval or FDNY-compliant torch work, we tell you up front, list it in the quote and handle the filings.
Do you work on flat roofs and brownstones?
That’s most of what we do. We repair and replace EPDM rubber, TPO, PVC and torch-down roofs, and we work on the parapets, coping, cornices, skylights and drains that come with brownstones and rowhouses.
Do you do commercial roofing?
Yes. We work on mixed-use buildings, storefronts and warehouses, and we schedule around tenants and businesses so the work disrupts as little as possible.
How do you price a roofing job?
After an on-roof inspection, you get a written, line-item quote: the roofing system, flashing and drain work, permits, clean-up and a per-board price for any rotted decking. We don’t give firm prices for roofs we haven’t seen.
Are you connected to Allstate Insurance?
No. All State Roofing – Brooklyn is an independent Brooklyn roofing contractor and is not affiliated with Allstate Insurance.
