“All the Old Stuff Must Be Removed”: A Brooklyn Roof Replacement, Four Years Later
This is the review we point people to when they ask whether a new layer over an old roof is good enough. Paul waited more than four years after his roof was replaced to write it.
“I waited a few years to write this review so it would be meaningful. John completely replaced my roof in 2018. My roof was in very bad shape and I had many roofers tell me or give me a choice of just putting on a new layer. John was the only one that said NO and told me that all the old stuff must be removed. I am glad that I listened to John. This house was built in the 1930s and the old roofing material was about 6-8 inches thick and so dried out that it was hard as rock. It must have weighed several tons, if not more. My roof is now over 4 years old and it still looks like the day it was put on. The material selection and workmanship is excellent after more than 4 years.”
Why this job mattered
Many older Brooklyn houses carry several roofs stacked on top of each other from decades of layovers. Building codes don’t allow a new roof over two or more existing layers, and the weight and trapped moisture are reason enough to take it all off. Tearing down to the deck let the new roof go onto a sound base, and it’s still holding up years later.

Shingle roof repair after storm damage
Are you in dire need of roof repair? When it heavily rains do you walk out of your house and find pieces of shingle and roof material scattered all over your sidewalk? If so, look no further and contact All State Roofing.
I had contacted several local companies in the area before choosing All State Roofing. I got all sorts of quotes and stories. John was very honest and informative. He was able to give me a very competitive price. From estimate to repairs it was all smooth sailing. My repair date was promptly fulfilled and my roof was repaired wonderfully. John and his team we super professional and did a great job after they finished with the clean up. I am very pleasantly surprised with how well the work came out. The roof looks brand spanking new.
So now I have peace of mind and no longer have mini heart attacks after a heavy rainfall. No more surprise roofing material pieces on my front porch and sidewalk. Great job, great company, and price is right. Thank you
New roof on a Brooklyn warehouse
I would love to recommend working with Allstate roofing in the month of March they did in my Warehouse tired new roof everything went with them smoothly. It was a tough complex job but their crew members were a real master pro. I am much very thankful to them.
Fixing an unfinished roof: reframing, skylights and shingles
My husband and I cannot say enough good things about John and his crew at Allstate. Our roof was unfinished from a previous roofer and we had all kinds of issues with it. It took us months to finally find the right person for the job and we were lucky to find him. From the very beginning he was honest, informative and punctual. Not only did he understand our vision but he also added some creative ideas, too. The precision and skill was clear from opening up our roof and reframing it, to installing skylights and shingles. It should also be noted that he always wore a mask around us or when entering our home, which adds comfort during an already stressful time. We highly recommend John and will definitely use him for future projects!
Emergency leak: short-term fix, then a lasting repair
I called about a leak we had in our roof, it was semi-complex and needed to be patched up to stop the water coming in, and John hopped right over to help us out that afternoon. He was very understanding and generous with his time explaining what he’d do both to fix the issue in the short term to stop the leak, and then to repair the roof when we had time later in a more lasting way. I’ll definitely be having him and his team back to replace the roof in the spring!
Replacing shingles that fell off
We found John through Yelp and my daughter asked for a quote. We had a few shingles that had fell down and needed to replace. He replied in a quick, timely manner. At first we had a little trouble in reaching him to come as he is a very busy guy, however he came to do our roof and it looks good. He was extremely efficient too. Told us if we had any problems to call him. Great customer service and a great guy. We will be contacting him the next time we need any roof work done. Recommend to others!

The Roof Problems Our Customers Called Us About
Each review starts with a problem that’s common on New York City roofs. If one of these sounds like your house, you’re not alone.
Shingles and roofing scattered on the sidewalk after heavy rain
Wind-lifted or worn shingles that come loose in every storm. Usually a shingle roof repair if the rest of the roof is sound; see our shingle roof services.
An old roof buried under too many layers
Common on houses built in the 1920s and 1930s, where decades of layovers have piled up. The fix is a full tear-off to the deck.
A leak that needs stopping today and fixing properly later
A temporary patch to keep water out, then a lasting repair when weather and schedule allow. More on our roof repair services.
A job another roofer left unfinished
Opening the roof back up, correcting the framing and finishing it properly, including skylights and shingles.
Commercial roofs on working buildings
Warehouses and storefronts, where the job has to be planned around a business that’s still open.
How to Read Roofing Reviews Before You Hire in NYC
Reviews help, but they’re one piece of the picture. Here’s what a Brooklyn homeowner should look for, whoever they end up hiring.
Look for specifics
Real reviews name the problem, the building and what was done: a 1930s house, a warehouse, shingles on the sidewalk. Vague five-word praise tells you little.
Check how reviews hold up over time
A roof can look great the day it’s finished. A review written years later, like Paul’s, tells you how the work actually lasted.
Verify the license
Home roofing in NYC requires a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license. Ask for the number and look it up on the DCWP website. We provide ours on request.
Ask for proof of insurance
A certificate of insurance protects you if something goes wrong on your property. Co-op boards and managing agents will ask for it anyway.
Get the scope in writing
A real quote names the roofing system, flashing, permits, cleanup and the price for any rotted decking, so there are no surprises mid-job.
Watch for storm chasers
Door-knockers after a big storm, cash-only deals and pressure to sign today are red flags. A local company will still be here next year.
